modifying shiftgate for 700r4
Permalink

I did some research but I'm having some trouble finding a step by step how to on modifying the shift gate for the extra forward gear with the 700r4. I did find a post on TC on the actual mod to the shift gate, but I'm not quite sure how to get to it. Has anyone ever done this or can anyone give be an idea how to get to it (ie pulling the steering wheel and taking apart the column etc?)

Thanks!

I think shiftworks.com has the pieces you need?

I've browsed their website and they don't have any info on dismantling a Chevelle column, not that I expected to find vehicle specific info but you weren't the first person to suggest that website. Thanks tho

most of the time when we do 700 swaps, careful adjusting of the stock stuff will get all gears.but the indicator wont line up exactly in all positions..really all that needs to happen is to shorten the pivot at the trans so the trans lever moves faster.that will generally get the job done..sometimes i can modify the stock lever.also lokar makes a shift rod/lever kit for GM columns that works well, its adjustable at the trans pivot to get all gears...

I tried adjusting the stock rod going back and forth about a dozen times moving 1/8 inch or so and if I got it to go into 1 then it would not come back into park or vice versa.

When you say shorten the pivot on the trans do you mean the shorten the piece that bolts to the trans with the square cut out? If so can you give me an idea of much it needs to be shortened? I would MUCH rather do this then tunnel through the colmun and pull the steering wheel etc..

Can you expand on what you mean by modify the the stock lever?

Thanks so much!

lets say there is 2 inches between the shiftshaft of the trans to where the linkage rod hooks to it..you would want to make that 1.5 inches.so your stock rod needs to be closer to the shiftshaft that comes out of the trans..that will speed up the movement at the trans...or make the column arm a bit longer...sometimes the stock stuff wont adjust without modification like your experiencing..

Ok that's a good idea, just to be clear are you saying to make it smaller by 1/2" or roughly 75%? I'm going to have to cut some out, then take it somewhere to get it welded up so I just want to make sure I get the length right the first time. Thanks!

no that length was just an example...i find it to be a trial and error situation.. this lokar kit would make it easy for you,as you can see it is very adjustable at the trans.

Well I was able to modify the linkage and I can now get the car into every gear, thankfully without getting into the column at all or having to buy aftermarket linkage, thanks for the advice!
