Neil's 68 chevelle project

Finally making some real progress on my 68 SS.  This has been a LONG time project,  but its getting serious now so I thought I would start a thread.  I bought this car to restore back when I was in high school in 1987 with $ I saved pumping gas.  .  Its a true ss car.  original buckets, 4 speed car.  Its really more of a restoration than a go fast/race project than u guys are used to.  But it will be a driver, not a trailer queen.  So it still might be interesting for some.  Found a guy to do the paint and body work for me.  Then I will try my hand at putting it all back together.  Got it all torn apart and dropped of to the body guy last week.

Going to build a 396 for it(Picked up from Daryl a few years ago).  Thinking of going to a 5 speed instead of the muncie 4speed.  It got a 3.55 12 bolt posi.  Probably stick with that if internals look googd.  For paint I am going back to the original color scheme.  Maroon with the black lower panels, and white stripes.  Still a lot of details to figure out.  But at least its finally moving forward after 30+ years lol.  I will try to post some pics as I go.  Probably a bunch of questions too.

Always cool to see another 68 come together!

Gimme a call when you get a chance and we'll chat about your seats.

Looks like a good project! Unfortunately by now most projects are that way. I think we would be pretty shocked if we stripped what appear to be nice cars down to bare metal... Wow, surprisingly that window channel cleaned up!

He used a wire wheel on a 4" angle grinder, and a couple boxes of sanding discs. Just about got all the old paint/primer off now. So hopefully all the surprises are over.

how long has he had it? looks like he's kicking ass!

Are you doing the frame & suspension stuff at your place while he does the body?

He's had it just over a week. He is kicking ass! Yes, he has the body and I'm working on the frame & suspension stuff at my house. But I'm moving at a snails pace. Starting to think about getting the frame sandblasted. I've been swamped at work, so not much is getting done on the frame. He said he wanted to have the car for less than 8 weeks to do the body work and paint. I thought there was no chance, but he is moving way faster than I thought. We have found a lot more rust than I thought, but I'm really happy with the progress.

Got most of it stripped down to the metal.  Found some more holes in the floor.  Got most of those welded up.  Waiting for a patch panel underneath the rear seat to come in.  Got the new dash and the lower rear quarter patches now.

Thanks Daryl. I guess I jinxed my self by saying all the rust surprises were over. When we cut off the lower rear quarter we found a real mess. Couldnt see it at all before. I'm not even sure how he is going to fix it yet.

Is that the outer wheel house? They reproduce them. It's only money, at least you know it will be done right with no short cuts.

Yes, it's just the lower corner on both outer wheel wells. I ordered 2 new ones. Looks like he will be able to cut and patch in just the corner without messing too much with where it attaches to the rear quarter. Got the new dash welded in. Got the floor cut out under the back seat. Too many holes, so putting in a full rear seat patch panel there. He also had to rework a lot of the bends on the 2 rear quarter patch panels. They were way off.
