Early BBC Head acc bolt size w/ pass side alternator
Permalink

Getting started bolting stuff together finally... Got new Upper and lower alternator brackets from summit installed.

I have the correct BBC alternator spacer from George... but i don't have a 6" bolt yet-

but the real problem is the size bolt that fits in to these acc holes in the head are too large to fit through the alternator case.

I'm assuming that the later heads use a smaller bolt size that fits through the alternator?

How do most people get around this when using early heads w/ 69+ style alternator mount?

Drill out the alternator case? Other ideas?

thanks!

I went to lowes wtih a bolt that fit into the head, and confirmed its 7/16 so that part from summit is right.

putting together another order tonight will get this in it too.

yes, that is what you need
Later heads, all the bolt holes are 3/8 and a regular bolt will work for you lower alternator bracket

Early heads, ya gotta use the special wonky bolt for Pass side alternator

Got it, cut down the spacer I had and it's all on and working now.. of course I found and was looking over my pics from 10 years back when I put the 454ho in the elcamino... It just had the alternator bolted to the lower bracket w/o attaching to the head at all and it worked fine! Could have done the same and saved $10. Lol. Oh well.

Getting real close now. Next weekend fireup looks achievable.
